A resolution against the Mekedatu Dam project, tabled by CM Vijay, received unanimous support in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution introduced by Chief Minister Vijay opposing Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu Dam project on the Cauvery River. The resolution received support from all parties in the House, including Congress and VCK, reflecting a united stance against the project.
The Assembly argued that the dam proposal violates the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment, while also disregarding the consent of other Cauvery basin states and lacking approval from the Union Government. It strongly objected to Karnataka's unilateral efforts to move forward with the project.
The resolution urged the Central Government to deny all forms of approval, including technical and environmental clearances, for the Mekedatu Dam. It emphasized that the Cauvery Basin is already a water-deficit region and that available water resources have been allocated among the basin states, leaving no scope for new projects or additional water utilization.
Highlighting the sensitivity of the Cauvery water-sharing issue between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Chief Minister Vijay called on the Centre to prevent the construction of any new dam or water storage project in the basin without the consent of all concerned states and necessary central approvals.
The Assembly also requested the Central Water Commission to stop examining or approving Karnataka's Detailed Project Report for the Mekedatu project. Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Tamil Nadu's interests, particularly those of its farmers, the House expressed unanimous support for all measures taken by the state government to oppose the project.
