A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 in magnitude struck northeastern and northern Japan on Monday, leading authorities to issue a tsunami warning. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at 4:53 p.m. at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers and registered an upper 5 on Japan’s 7-level seismic intensity scale. Initially, the United States Geological Survey estimated the magnitude at 7.4, but it was later revised upward.

Following the quake, an 80-centimeter tsunami was recorded at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture. Officials warned that tsunami waves as high as 3 meters could reach the Pacific coastal areas of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate, urging residents to remain alert and take immediate precautions. The agency also cautioned that earthquakes of similar intensity could occur within the next week.

Despite the strong tremors, no abnormalities were reported at several nuclear facilities in the region, including the Higashidori and Onagawa plants, as well as the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini stations. Operators confirmed that all systems were functioning normally. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the situation, advising people in affected regions to evacuate to higher ground as a safety measure. Emergency services were placed on high alert to respond to any potential damage or emergencies.

JR East temporarily suspended services on the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train line between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori as a precautionary step. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while urging the public to follow official guidance and stay prepared for possible aftershocks or further developments.
