Who Is Gitanjali J. Angmo? Sonam Wangchuk's Wife to Lead CJP's Parliament March Amid His Hunger Strike

Gitanjali J. Angmo, the wife of education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, is set to lead the Cockroach Janta Partys (CJP) planned Chalo Sansad march to Parliament on Monday as Wangchuk remains hospitalized during his ongoing indefinite hunger strike. The development places Angmo at the forefront of a protest movement that has gained nationwide attention over demands for greater accountability in Indias education system.

The march comes as Wangchuk continues his fast in protest against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and broader concerns surrounding education governance. With doctors monitoring his health, Angmo has announced that she will represent him during the demonstration, saying the movement will continue despite his inability to participate in person.

Gitanjali J. Angmo is an educator, social entrepreneur, and the Founder, CEO, and Dean of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), an institution she co-founded with Wangchuk to promote practical and community-driven higher education in the Himalayan region. Born in Balasore, Odisha, she studied physics before earning an MBA in Marketing and Finance. Before dedicating herself to education and social development, she worked in the corporate sector and later established several entrepreneurial ventures. Over the years, Angmo has built a reputation for championing innovative learning models that combine sustainability, experiential education, and local community engagement. Her work earned her the Government of Indias Women Transforming India Award in recognition of her contributions to education and community development.

Speaking ahead of the Parliament march, Angmo said Wangchuk intends to continue his hunger strike unless political leaders provide concrete assurances that issues related to education accountability will be discussed during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. She has maintained that the protest is aimed at securing meaningful reforms rather than making symbolic demands.

The planned march has prompted heightened security arrangements in central Delhi, with authorities restricting public gatherings around Parliament. The Delhi High Court has also declined to grant interim relief in Angmos plea seeking Wangchuks transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to a private medical facility, a decision she has challenged through further legal proceedings.

Political leaders and civil society groups have continued to express interest in the developments. National Conference president Farooq Abdullah met Angmo on Sunday and conveyed his support for Wangchuks recovery and the concerns being raised by the movement. As the Chalo Sansad march unfolds, Gitanjali J. Angmo has emerged as one of the leading voices of the campaign. While she has long worked alongside Sonam Wangchuk on education and community initiatives in Ladakh, her decision to head the march reflects an increasingly visible public role in one of the countrys most closely watched protest movements.
