Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops across the state in one of the first major decisions of his newly formed government. The move is being seen as a strong step toward tighter liquor regulation and public welfare reforms in Tamil Nadu. According to government officials, the liquor outlets identified for closure are located within 500 metres of schools, colleges, temples, churches, mosques, and major bus stands. Authorities have reportedly been instructed to complete the shutdown process within the next two weeks.
The action follows a statewide review of TASMAC outlets after Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured a major electoral victory, marking a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape. Officials said the decision was taken to reduce public inconvenience and limit easy access to alcohol in sensitive areas. Out of the 717 shops, several were found operating near educational institutions and religious places, while others were located close to crowded transport hubs.
The closure order has sparked widespread discussion across the state because TASMAC remains one of Tamil Nadu’s largest sources of revenue. Despite the financial implications, the government appears determined to push forward with stricter control measures. Supporters of the move have welcomed the decision, saying it could improve public safety and reduce social problems linked to alcohol consumption. Women’s groups and local residents in several districts have long demanded the removal of liquor shops from residential and public areas.
However, some experts have questioned whether shutting shops alone will solve the issue without stronger rehabilitation programs and stricter action against illegal liquor sales. Political analysts believe the decision helps Vijay reinforce his image as a leader focused on social reform and governance. The move is also being viewed as an attempt to deliver quickly on campaign promises made during the elections. While it remains unclear whether the government plans a wider prohibition policy in the future, the closure of 717 TASMAC outlets marks one of the biggest liquor-control actions seen in Tamil Nadu in recent years.
