Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami marked the completion of four years of his government on Friday by outlining key achievements, with a major focus on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a significant poll promise. Speaking to ANI, CM Dhami said, “The UCC was part of our electoral commitment. We implemented it within the state under the leadership of the Prime Minister. It was a resolution we presented to the people of Uttarakhand, and we have fulfilled it.”
Uttarakhand became the first state in India to implement the UCC, which came into effect on January 27, just seven months ago. Back in May, CM Dhami had praised the law, saying it had helped liberate Muslim women from certain social injustices. UCC has liberated Muslim sisters from societal evils. It ensures justice for all women, especially in matters of inheritance and property rights, he had said during a previous address.
He also addressed the misconceptions being spread about the UCC, stressing that the law is not targeted at any religion or community. “UCC is meant to promote equality and eliminate outdated practices. It’s a vital reform for the welfare of society as a whole,” he explained. Since the law’s rollout, over 1.5 lakh applications have been received from nearly every village in the state, reflecting broad public support, the CM added.
To ensure smooth implementation, the government has developed a comprehensive system, including a dedicated portal and mobile app for public use. Over 14,000 village-level Common Service Centres (CSCs) have also been connected to the UCC framework. In addition to UCC, CM Dhami highlighted the urgency of revising the state’s land law. Currently, the law restricts the sale of agricultural and horticultural land in 11 of Uttarakhand’s 13 districts. The remaining two districts, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, are exempt from these restrictions.
