The United States is planning to impose new tariffs on imports from India and 59 other countries, accusing them of failing to take sufficient action against forced labour practices in supply chains. According to reports, the proposed tariffs could range from 10% to 15% on selected goods entering the US market. The move is part of an ongoing investigation by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) under Section 301 of the US Trade Act.
India, along with countries including China, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea, has reportedly been named in the proposal. US authorities claim that weak enforcement against forced labour gives exporters from these countries an unfair advantage in global trade. The US government said products linked to forced labour continue to enter international markets despite existing regulations. Officials believe stronger trade measures are necessary to protect ethical business practices and ensure fair competition for American industries.
The proposal comes amid growing global scrutiny over labour conditions in manufacturing and supply chains. In recent years, the US has tightened restrictions on imports suspected of being produced through exploitative labour practices. The tariffs could affect several Indian export sectors, including textiles, electronics, engineering goods, chemicals, and solar equipment. Trade experts say Indian exporters may face additional compliance checks and documentation requirements in the coming months.
The development also arrives at a sensitive time for India-US trade relations. Both countries are currently engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and improving market access. Industry analysts believe the proposed tariffs could increase pressure on exporting nations to improve supply chain transparency and labour monitoring systems. Some experts also view the move as part of a broader US strategy to rebuild trade barriers and reduce dependence on overseas manufacturing. The tariffs remain under review, and the USTR is expected to seek public comments before taking a final decision. There has been no official response yet from the Indian government regarding the proposed measures.
