A US citizen was detained by Indian security personnel near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh after allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal without carrying valid travel documents. The man, identified as Jordan Brown, claimed during questioning that he had previously served in the US Navy, prompting authorities to launch a detailed investigation into his identity and travel history.
According to officials, Brown was intercepted by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) during a routine patrol near the Sonauli border in Maharajganj district. Security personnel reportedly signaled him to stop, but he allegedly tried to flee before being apprehended. A search revealed that he was not carrying a passport, visa, or any other valid identity documents.
During interrogation, Brown told investigators that he had traveled to Thailand on a tourist visa, where he claimed to have lost his passport. Instead of obtaining replacement travel documents through the US embassy, he allegedly continued traveling and eventually reached India. Authorities are now verifying these claims through official channels.
The American national also claimed to be a former US Navy serviceman and, according to some reports, said he had served in US Special Forces. Indian authorities, however, have not confirmed these statements and are working with relevant agencies and diplomatic officials to establish the authenticity of his claims. Investigators said Brown gave varying accounts of his journey and background during questioning, raising additional questions about his movements. He reportedly claimed to have visited nearly 70 countries before arriving at the India-Nepal border, making his undocumented travel a key focus of the ongoing probe.
Police have informed the US Embassy about the detention, while immigration and security agencies continue to examine his travel history and determine whether any immigration or border laws were violated. Officials have not indicated any evidence linking the case to espionage or other national security offences at this stage. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident has once again highlighted the heightened vigilance maintained along the India-Nepal border. Although Indian and Nepali citizens enjoy relatively open cross-border movement under bilateral arrangements, foreign nationals are required to carry valid passports, visas, and other travel documents when crossing the international border. Security agencies routinely monitor the region to prevent illegal crossings and other cross-border violations.
