US Envoy Sergio Gor Meets Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman to Strengthen Bilateral Relations and Trade Cooperation

US Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday during a courtesy visit at the Prime Ministers Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka. The two leaders discussed a range of issues aimed at strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States. According to a statement from the Prime Ministers Office, the talks focused on enhancing bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and promoting regional cooperation on matters of shared interest.

Ahead of his meeting with the Prime Minister, Gor also held discussions with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Friday. The meeting took place at a hotel in Dhaka, though officials did not disclose the specific topics covered. A diplomatic source described the interaction as productive but declined to provide further details. Gor had previously welcomed Dinesh Trivedi to his new role as Indias High Commissioner to Bangladesh on June 25, expressing his eagerness to work closely with him in advancing regional engagement.

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Rahman, Gor shared his views on X, saying the discussions centered on expanding economic cooperation and deepening the partnership between the United States and Bangladesh. He described stronger bilateral ties as a priority for Washington and said both countries have significant opportunities to achieve meaningful progress through closer collaboration.

The US envoy also met Bangladeshs Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on Thursday and travelled to Coxs Bazar on Friday to visit Rohingya refugee camps, where he reviewed the humanitarian situation. The United States upgraded its travel advisory for Bangladesh during Gors visit. The advisory level was revised from Level 3: Reconsider Travel to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, indicating improved security conditions in the country.

Bangladeshs Foreign Ministry welcomed the revision, saying it reflects Washingtons increased confidence in the countrys security environment and overall stability. The ministry attributed the improvement to recent efforts by the government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to strengthen law enforcement and maintain public order. It also said the updated advisory highlights the continued growth of the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the United States.
