PRAGUE — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Sunday, May 4, that a ceasefire with Russia could be established at any moment, emphasizing the need for increased pressure from Kyiv’s allies to compel Moscow to act. During a press conference with Czech President Petr Pavel in Prague, Zelenskiy warned that without greater international pressure, Russian President Vladimir Putin was unlikely to take meaningful steps to stop the war. “Without heightened pressure, Russia won’t implement real measures to end the conflict. Today marks the 54th day since Russia disregarded even the U.S. proposal for a full ceasefire,” Zelenskiy said.
He added that a ceasefire could begin immediately and should last for at least 30 days to provide room for diplomatic efforts. Last week, Putin announced a three-day truce from May 8–10 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II. However, Zelenskiy dismissed the move as symbolic and instead urged an unconditional month-long ceasefire in line with a U.S. initiative launched in March.
The Czech Republic, a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion, has spearheaded a major ammunition supply effort. Zelenskiy called for stronger sanctions against Russia, enhanced military support for Ukraine, and broader European defense cooperation. “Rather than showcasing tanks on May 9, Putin should focus on ending his war,” he said.
Moscow, for its part, has requested a clear response from Zelenskiy regarding the three-day ceasefire offer. Czech President Pavel noted that Russia has shown no real intent to de-escalate. “President Putin holds all the power to end this war with a single decision, but that willingness is still missing,” he remarked. Through their initiative, the Czechs have sourced large-calibre ammunition globally, with funding from NATO allies. Ukraine received 1.6 million rounds over the past year and hopes to receive 1.8 million more in 2025, according to Zelenskiy.
He also highlighted ongoing cooperation in aviation, including pilot training and support for Ukraine’s F-16 fleet. Zelenskiy, joined on the trip by First Lady Olena Zelenska, will meet Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Monday to further discuss the ammunition programme. On social media, Zelenskiy said he is preparing for high-level diplomatic meetings aimed at pushing Russia toward a ceasefire. He also mentioned recent talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump in the Vatican, where both agreed that a 30-day ceasefire would be a vital first step toward ending the war.
