Two people were injured after a stabbing at a gurdwara in Edmonton, Canada, on Friday morning, with police arresting a 27-year-old man in connection with the incident. The stabbing took place at the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple in northeast Edmonton while morning prayers were being held. Police said they received reports of a man walking in traffic near the area shortly before calls came in about an incident inside the gurdwara.
According to investigators, the suspect entered the place of worship and tried to make his way toward the prayer area. People inside confronted him, leading to a struggle during which two men were injured. Police said a screwdriver was used in the attack. The injured worshippers, aged 75 and 51, were taken to hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening. People at the gurdwara reportedly restrained the suspect before officers arrived and arrested him.
Police said the accused had a history of violent offences and had been released from a federal correctional facility only a day before the incident. Investigators are now examining his movements before the stabbing and the circumstances that led him to the gurdwara. Authorities have not established a motive. Edmonton police are also examining whether the incident could have involved a hate-related motive, but officials have cautioned that no conclusion has been reached.
The attack prompted a strong reaction from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who described the incident as appalling and expressed his support for those injured and Edmontons Sikh community. He also praised police for their response and stressed that people should be able to worship without fear. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the Sikh community.
The incident occurred ahead of a wedding ceremony that was scheduled to take place at the gurdwara later in the day. Despite the disruption, the ceremony reportedly proceeded as planned. Police continue to investigate the case, including the suspects recent release from custody and the circumstances surrounding his presence at the gurdwara. The motive remains a key part of the investigation.
