U.S. President Donald Trump said he no longer views artificial intelligence company Anthropic as a national security threat, reversing his earlier concerns about the company’s operations, according to an interview with “The Axios Show” published Friday. Trump said he may have considered Anthropic a potential national security risk about a week earlier but changed his position after the company responded to the administration’s concerns. He specifically praised Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, saying the executive handled the situation “very quickly” and “responsibly.”
The dispute involved access to Anthropic’s most advanced AI systems, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company had temporarily restricted access to the models after the Trump administration directed it to block foreign nationals from using them, citing concerns related to advanced artificial intelligence technology and security. Anthropic’s senior technical leaders were expected to meet with administration officials to discuss the disagreement and find a resolution. Trump’s comments came shortly after he and other G7 leaders met with technology executives, including Amodei, during a summit in France.
Although Trump did not rule out using emergency powers under the Defense Production Act against Anthropic, he suggested such measures may not be necessary. He said he has broad authority under the law but was unsure whether it would need to be used. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company appreciated the administration’s cooperation and was committed to resolving the matter. The company added that it remains focused on protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring the United States continues to lead in artificial intelligence development.
