Three coaches of Train No. 14317 Ujjaini Express derailed during a shunting operation near Khand Gaon railway yard in Rishikesh, railway officials confirmed on Tuesday. Fortunately, the train was completely empty at the time of the incident, and no casualties or injuries were reported. According to officials from the Moradabad Division of Northern Railway, the derailment occurred near Yog Nagari Railway Station around 9:30 PM on Monday night. Initial reports suggest that the incident may have been caused by a brake failure during routine maintenance work, though the exact reason is yet to be officially confirmed.
Soon after the derailment, railway authorities launched rescue and restoration operations at the site. Cranes and heavy machinery were brought in to remove the damaged coaches that had gone off the tracks. Teams worked throughout the night and into the morning to clear the affected section and restore normal rail operations in the area. The accident also attracted a large crowd near the railway tracks shortly after the incident. Personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) reached the location and managed the situation by clearing people from the area to ensure that restoration work could continue without disruption.
Railway officials stated that a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Technical experts are expected to inspect the coaches, tracks, and braking systems as part of the inquiry. Although no passengers were involved and no injuries occurred, the incident has raised concerns about railway safety and maintenance procedures. Authorities are expected to submit a full report after the investigation is completed.
