Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of Bangladeshs opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is set to become the nations next prime minister following his partys decisive victory in the parliamentary elections held yesterday. After 17 years in exile in London, Rahmans return to Dhaka in December 2025 marked a turning point, especially after the ouster of longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid mass protests the previous year.
With over 55% voter turnout, the BNP and its allies captured a two-thirds majority in the 300-seat parliament, winning approximately 165 seats while rivals like Jamaat-e-Islami secured around 40 to 60. Rahman himself triumphed in two constituencies, including Bogura-6, solidifying his leadership. The Awami League, Hasinas former party, was barred from contesting, paving the way for BNP dominance in what observers called the first truly competitive polls since 2001.
Rahman, son of late BNP leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, had fled Bangladesh in 2008 amid graft convictions handed down in absentia. Cleared of all charges post-Hasina, his homecoming drew massive crowds under heavy security. Leading the BNP virtually during his absence, Rahman now steps into the prime minister-designate role, carrying forward a political dynasty rooted in his mother and grandfather Ziaur Rahman.
The BNP has pledged economic reforms, foreign investment drives, anti-corruption measures, and protections for minorities amid concerns over Islamist groups. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended congratulations, hinting at hopes for stable bilateral ties. Critics, however, point to Rahmans controversial past, including corruption allegations, as potential hurdles ahead. As celebrations mix with mourning for Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh enters a new era under BNP rule.
