With each season of the hit series Squid Game, fans grew attached to its distinct characters, and season one’s Ali Abdul stood out in particular. The character was portrayed by Anupam Tripathi, an Indian actor based in South Korea, who recently spoke to Hankook Ilbo about landing his first lead role in the Korean mystery film Rhapsody for the Dead.
The 36-year-old plays Anuat, a man haunted by a dark past and hidden secrets, who crosses paths with Soo-ah, played by Im Do-hwa, a young woman cursed to die at 25. The story unfolds over a single night, leading the pair toward a chilling fate. Reflecting on his casting, Anupam said, “I asked why they chose me,” recalling his surprise when the director offered him the lead role. The director explained that after watching Anupam in the K-drama King the Land as King Samir, they discovered a side of him beyond his well-known portrayal of Ali.
Known publicly for his warm and kind demeanor, Anupam said he had often been told his gentle appearance and expressive eyes made him unsuitable for villainous roles. Nevertheless, he is ready to take on the challenge in Rhapsody for the Dead. He shared, “This is the first time a Korean movie is releasing with me as the lead. For an Indian actor, this rarely happens, so I am both excited and nervous.” Anupam recently appeared as Nimal in the fantasy-action K-drama Oh My Ghost Clients. Rhapsody for the Dead premiered in South Korea on August 27.
