Somnath Trust Undertakes Unique Initiatives to Commemorate Chairman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 76th Birthday

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday virtually inaugurated a range of new initiatives undertaken by the Somnath Trust to commemorate the 76th birth anniversary of Trust Chairman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Among the key initiatives was the introduction of eco-friendly, reusable packaging for Somnath Dada’s prasad, along with the launch of an enhanced version of the ‘Somnath Yatra’ mobile application aimed at making the pilgrimage more convenient and organised for devotees.

According to an official release, the new prasad boxes have been designed and developed jointly by the National Institute of Design (NID) and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). The packaging uses high-quality cardboard and features an attractive hexagonal design that is both durable and environmentally friendly. The new boxes are intended to protect the prasad from moisture and air, helping it remain fresh for a longer period. The design also supports recycling, thereby reducing reliance on plastic and other forms of polluting waste. Devotees can reuse the boxes as souvenirs after consuming the prasad, giving the packaging an additional purpose.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel termed the initiative a model effort that combines environmental responsibility with improved convenience for pilgrims visiting the Somnath temple. The upgraded ‘Somnath Yatra’ app has also been made operational. The platform is designed as a one-stop digital solution for pilgrims from India and abroad, providing them with information and services intended to make planning and completing their Somnath visit easier.

On the occasion, a major distribution drive was also highlighted. As many as 70,000 laddus, weighing a combined 27,000 kg, were distributed among children. The Somnath Trust, which oversees Somnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, has undertaken these initiatives with an emphasis on environmental sustainability, social outreach and improving the experience of devotees. Officials and members associated with the project joined the virtual event from Gandhinagar. Those present included GPCB Chairman Ranjit Barad, Member Secretary Dipika Ben Tank, Somnath Trust Secretary and Additional Collector Yogendra Desai, as well as faculty members from NID involved in developing the packaging.

Under the Trust’s ‘Sauna Nath Somnath’ campaign, clothing was distributed among more than 10,000 senior citizens living in around 134 old-age homes spread across 29 districts of Gujarat. The Trust said that, so far, nearly 22,000 items of clothing have been distributed as prasad among tribal communities, Rishi Kumaras and elderly citizens as part of its social outreach efforts.
