The Uttarakhand Polices State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) successfully rescued a young man who had fallen into a deep gorge along the Kedarnath trekking route late on Wednesday, officials confirmed. The accident took place near Chhodi, around two kilometres beyond Gaurikund. After receiving an emergency alert from the District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) in Rudraprayag on the night of July 15, an SDRF team was immediately dispatched to carry out the rescue.
Led by Team Commander Ashish Dimri, the SDRF unit from the Gaurikund Post reached the location equipped with specialised rescue gear. Working alongside local police, the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF), and YMF personnel, the team launched a search operation despite poor visibility and difficult weather conditions. Battling steep terrain and challenging circumstances, rescuers descended into the gorge, located the injured man, and safely brought him back to the trekking route before evacuating him to Gaurikund.
The victim received first aid at the site and was later transported to a hospital for further treatment. Officials identified the rescued individual as Mohit Rawat, a resident of Badasu village in the Rampur area of Rudraprayag district. The Kedarnath pilgrimage route is currently experiencing a large number of devotees, prompting the SDRF to maintain rescue teams at strategically important locations to respond quickly to emergencies, especially during the monsoon season.
The Char Dham Yatra, one of Indias most revered pilgrimages, began on April 19 with traditional rituals at various shrines. The annual journey to the Kedarnath Temple officially started with the ceremonial procession of Lord Kedarnaths Panchmukhi palanquin from its winter abode at Omkareshwar Temple. To ensure the pilgrimage proceeds safely and efficiently, the Uttarakhand Police have put in place extensive security and crowd-management measures across the Char Dham route.
