As the Indian Air Force (IAF) evaluates options for its Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program, SAAB’s Gripen-E emerges as a strong contender, offering a comprehensive suite of capabilities designed to counter modern threats while ensuring long-term operational effectiveness. Kent-Åke Molin, Head of the Gripen India campaign, emphasized that the aircraft’s advanced weapons, state-of-the-art sensors, countermeasure systems, and user-friendly Human-Machine Collaboration (HMC) make it an ideal fit for Indias defense needs.
A key priority for the IAF is the speed of delivery and the seamless transfer of technology to Indian industry, enabling not just domestic production but also future advancements. SAAB leverages cutting-edge manufacturing techniques such as AI, model-based development, additive manufacturing, and high-speed machining to significantly reduce production time. SAAB’s proposal includes an extensive industrial program focused on self-reliance, sustainable high-tech jobs, and business opportunities across India. The company plans to transfer Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities, localize aircraft component and engine assembly, and establish a Gripen Design Centre in Bangalore. This facility will engage local engineers in avionics and software development, ensuring India has full control over its fighter systems, including future upgrades and modifications.
Beyond the Gripen program, SAAB’s technology transfer offer could also support Indias indigenous fighter projects, such as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Additionally, the company envisions India as a global export hub for Gripen E aircraft and related technologies, reinforcing the nation’s self-reliance in defense production while catering to international markets.
