Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, currently on a three-day visit to Germany, attended an Indian community event at the Embassy in Berlin on Wednesday, where he interacted with members of the Indian diaspora. In a post on X, he described the diaspora as a “living bridge” between India and Germany, highlighting their growing influence. He also emphasized India’s rapid economic expansion and technological advancements in sectors such as infrastructure, startups, space, and digital innovation.
During his address, Singh expressed his delight in engaging with the community and reiterated the important role of the diaspora in strengthening bilateral ties. Earlier, while speaking to the German Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence and Security, he stressed that Aatmanirbhar Bharat is not just about procurement but an opportunity for co-creation, co-development, and co-innovation, particularly in defence collaboration between India and Germany.
He pointed out that the global security landscape is becoming increasingly complex due to evolving threats and rapid technological changes, calling for adaptive strategies and stronger partnerships. Singh noted that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India’s defence sector is undergoing significant transformation, and deeper cooperation with German industries could bring mutual benefits. He praised Germany’s strong industrial base and its dynamic small and medium enterprises, often referred to as the Mittelstand, while also highlighting the growing capabilities of Indian startups and private companies.
The minister emphasized the importance of coordinated responses and trusted strategic partnerships to tackle modern global challenges, adding that both Prime Minister Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are committed to strengthening bilateral ties. He also noted increasing alignment at the European Union level, particularly through the expanding India-EU defence and strategic partnership. Singh is visiting Germany from April 21 to 23. Upon his arrival in Berlin from Munich, he was received with military honours at the airport and flown in a special German Air Force aircraft escorted by fighter jets.
