A disturbing case of violence against a minor has rocked Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan, where a 19-year-old photographer allegedly threw acid at a 14-year-old schoolgirl for turning down his advances. The attack took place on January 16, 2026, near Subhash Park in Kesrisinghpur as the Class 9 student headed to school.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man on a bike, face covered with a cloth and helmet obscuring his number plate, hurling a bottle of acid at the girl before fleeing. She sustained burns to her clothes and one finger, but prompt medical aid limited the damage. The assailant, identified as Omprakash alias Jani, had spotted her earlier while covering a wedding shoot and persistently tried to contact her afterward.
Rejected outright by the girl, who scolded him for his unwanted attention, Omprakash nursed a grudge that escalated into this brutal retaliation. Police used CCTV footage and community tips to track him down after a three-day manhunt, leading to his arrest on January 19. Superintendent of Police Dr. Amrita Duhan even announced a Rs 25,000 reward for information, highlighting the difficulties in identifying masked perpetrators.
Following his capture, authorities paraded Omprakash through local markets to deter similar offenses and reinforce zero tolerance. The investigation remains ongoing while the young victim receives treatment and support. This incident underscores the persistent threat of acid attacks in India, where such crimes often stem from rejected proposals, urging faster implementation of protective laws and community vigilance for girls safety.
