Guntur district police have confiscated 4.8 kilograms of ganja and registered cases against several individuals as part of their continuing drive to curb drug abuse, officials said. Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal stated on Sunday that the narcotics were recovered from four peddlers and ten consumers. He added that all the accused would be arrested and sent for remand the same day.
SP Jindal said the police have intensified action against those involved in the consumption and sale of ganja, noting that nearly 200 people have been arrested in 40 related cases over the past three months. He also said that awareness programs are being conducted across schools and colleges to educate students about the dangers of drug use. Authorities confirmed that the crackdown will continue as part of efforts to control narcotics distribution and protect public health.
In a separate case in December, Pune police uncovered a major drug racket after seizing hydroponic cannabis being grown inside a rented apartment in Pimpri-Chinchwad and recovering narcotics valued at approximately Rs 3.45 crore. Senior officers said preliminary investigations suggest links to an international drug trafficking network. Deputy Commissioner of Police Somay Munde, who led the operation, said the racket was exposed following the arrest of a suspect in a drug sale case. This led to coordinated raids in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Mumbai, and Goa. During these operations, police recovered multiple illegal substances, including mephedrone, hydroponic cannabis known as Ozikush, charas, and LSD.
Five individuals were arrested in connection with the case: Tushar Chetan Verma (21), Sumit Santosh Dedwal (25), Akshay Sukhlal Maher (25), Malay Rajesh Deliwala (28), and Swaraj Anant Bhosale (28). Authorities also froze Rs 7.80 lakh from the accused persons’ bank accounts, and all five have been remanded to police custody. Police said Verma was first detained in the Khadki area based on specific intelligence regarding drug sales. During questioning, investigators learned that Dedwal and Maher had rented a flat in Pimpri where hydroponic marijuana was being cultivated. Acting on this information, officers raided the location and seized both the cannabis and the equipment used in its cultivation.
