A prominent political leader in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has stirred fresh debate over the regions political status after declaring at a large public gathering that the territory is neither Azad nor disputed, but occupied. The remarks were made by Sardar Aman Khan while addressing thousands of supporters at a rally in Rawalakot. His statement directly challenged Pakistans long-standing description of the region as Azad Jammu and Kashmir, claiming that the people living there have not experienced genuine political freedom.
The rally witnessed a significant turnout, with participants raising concerns over governance, civil rights, and economic conditions. Protesters also called for greater political representation and accountability from the authorities. The comments come at a time when Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has been witnessing growing public unrest. In recent weeks, demonstrations have been organized over issues ranging from governance and rising living costs to restrictions on political activities. Some of these protests reportedly resulted in clashes between demonstrators and security personnel, leading to casualties and arrests.
Addressing the gathering, Aman Khan said the people of the region should have the right to determine their own future without external pressure. His remarks drew loud applause from the crowd and reflected increasing frustration among sections of the local population. The developments have also attracted attention in India. New Delhi has consistently maintained that the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including the areas currently under Pakistans control, is an integral part of India. Indian officials have previously criticized Pakistan over its handling of protests and alleged human rights concerns in the territory.
Political analysts believe the speech is notable because such direct criticism of Pakistans position is rarely made publicly in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. They say the growing number of protests suggests that local grievances over governance and economic issues are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The Kashmir issue has remained one of South Asias most sensitive geopolitical disputes since the partition of British India in 1947. While India refers to the territory as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Pakistan officially calls part of the region Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Both countries continue to assert competing claims over the region.
Observers say the latest rally highlights not only the broader India-Pakistan dispute but also the internal political and social challenges facing residents of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Whether these demonstrations evolve into a larger political movement remains to be seen, but they have once again brought international attention to developments inside the region.
