Piyush Goyal on Tuesday paid homage at the Kanishka Memorial in Toronto, remembering the victims of the Air India Flight 182 bombing and meeting with families affected by the tragedy. Describing the bombing as one of the worst terrorist attacks in aviation history, he stressed that India and Canada are working together to ensure such an incident is never repeated.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Goyal said he visited the memorial at Humber Bay Park to honor those who lost their lives in the 1985 bombing. He also interacted with relatives of the victims, who spoke about their grief, strength, and resilience over the years. He reiterated the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries to prevent similar acts of terrorism in the future. On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was destroyed mid-air near Cork, Ireland, in a bombing carried out by the Canada-based Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa. All 329 passengers and crew members on board were killed in the attack.
Goyal is currently in Canada on a three-day official visit from May 25 to 27, during which India and Canada are advancing talks on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The agreement is being viewed as an important step toward improving bilateral economic relations. During the visit, Goyal met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Foreign Minister Anita Anand, and other senior leaders and industry representatives to discuss trade, investment, technology cooperation, infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, and critical minerals processing.
