Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and BJP leader Numal Momin on Wednesday said that State Congress President Gaurav Gogoi is likely to suffer a major defeat from the Jorhat constituency in the upcoming Assembly elections. He expressed confidence that the BJP will achieve a record breaking performance in the polls.
Speaking to ANI, Momin extended his wishes to Gogoi and other candidates but asserted that the Congress would lose in every seat it contests. He said Gogoi would face a particularly heavy defeat in Jorhat and predicted that the 2026 Assembly elections would deliver an unprecedented victory for the BJP. Assam Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass criticised the Opposition for targeting the state governments Orunodoi 3.0 scheme. He said if the Opposition forms the government, they are free to stop the scheme, but the current government will continue its efforts to make India self reliant.
Under the Orunodoi 3.0 initiative, the Assam government provides a monthly financial assistance of 1250 rupees to women from low income households. The 126 seat Assam Assembly is expected to go to polls in March or April, though the Election Commission of India has not yet announced the official dates. In the 2021 elections, the NDA alliance consisting of the BJP, AGP and UPPL secured 75 seats, with the BJP emerging as the largest partner with 60 seats.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the BJP will finalise its candidate list for the upcoming elections between March 11 and 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on March 13 and 14, where he will inaugurate several development projects and distribute land rights certificates to members of the tea garden community. The Chief Minister said the Prime Minister will dedicate projects worth 10000 rupees in Guwahati and address public meetings in Kokrajhar, Guwahati and Silchar during the two day visit.
