At least five people are missing after a powerful flash flood swept away houses and damaged bridges along the Budhi Gandaki River in Nepals Gorkha district. Authorities suspect that the sudden surge may have been triggered by the breach of a natural dam formed by a landslide. The flood struck early Sunday, October 11, catching residents in the mountainous region off guard. The rushing water carried mud, rocks and debris downstream, causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
According to preliminary assessments, a landslide may have blocked a stream in the Chumnubri area, allowing water to accumulate behind the debris. The suspected barrier may subsequently have collapsed, releasing a sudden surge into the river system. Rescue teams, including personnel from the Nepal Army and police, have been deployed to search for the missing people and evacuate residents from vulnerable areas. Helicopters have also been used to assist operations in locations where damaged roads and bridges have restricted access.
Authorities have urged people living along the Budhi Gandaki River to move to safer locations and avoid riverbanks as a precaution. The flood has also raised concerns about damage to transport links, electricity infrastructure and hydropower-related facilities. Flash floods caused by landslide-dammed rivers can be particularly dangerous because water may accumulate behind unstable debris before being released suddenly. The resulting surge can travel rapidly through narrow mountain valleys, leaving communities with little time to respond.
Nepals mountainous terrain makes it vulnerable to landslides and sudden flooding, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Emergency teams are continuing search-and-rescue operations while officials assess the extent of the damage and investigate the cause of the disaster. The number of missing people and the full scale of the destruction may change as authorities receive further information from affected communities.
