Mark Hamill, 73, who first portrayed Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977, has made it clear that he has no intention of reprising the iconic role. He believes the franchise should now shift its focus toward new characters and storylines rather than revisiting the past. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Hamill expressed gratitude to George Lucas for originally including him in the groundbreaking saga. He reflected on how no one anticipated Star Wars becoming a lasting cultural phenomenon. “I had my time, and I’m thankful for that,” he said. “But it’s time to move on and spotlight the future and all the new characters.”
Hamill’s last major role in the series was as a Force ghost in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), a continuation of the events from The Last Jedi (2017), where his character vanished after a climactic moment. Jokingly, he mentioned that returning now would be impossible: “I disappeared in The Last Jedi—left my robes behind. I’m not about to come back as a naked Force ghost!”
He also opened up about how the death of his friend and co-star Carrie Fisher in 2016 changed his feelings toward the franchise. Hamill recalled how devastated he was when his wife, Marilou York, informed him of Fisher’s passing, which he said deeply altered his connection to Star Wars: “The heart was gone. I don’t talk about it much because it’s too painful.”
Mark also praised Fisher for her powerful presence in the films, noting how her portrayal of Princess Leia embodied “effortless feminism.” He admired her for fearlessly confronting Darth Vader and taking control of situations, often outshining both Luke and Han Solo. “She was fierce and unapologetic,” he said, recalling her bold dialogue and leadership. “She made us look like amateurs—and that’s what made her so brilliant.”
