Following clashes involving Manipur Police, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and members of COCOMI (Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity), who were attempting to boycott the Sangai Festival, the police stated that the law-and-order situation in the state is now “normal.” In a press release on Friday, Manipur Police confirmed that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
Over the past 24 hours, the overall situation in the state remained stable. The 2025 Sangai Festival officially began today at the Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre in Imphal, inaugurated by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The opening ceremony, attended by senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary, the DGP, and other elected leaders, featured cultural performances celebrating the state’s rich heritage.
The police have appealed to the public for cooperation in maintaining order. The clashes occurred as IDPs demanded rehabilitation amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis, while COCOMI sought to boycott the festival, which showcases Manipur’s art, culture, cuisine, and traditions through performances, traditional games, and food stalls.
Security forces continue search operations and area domination in vulnerable districts, including intelligence-based combing, cordon, and search operations targeting extortion and criminal activities. These incidents occur against the backdrop of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities that erupted in 2023, resulting in around 260 deaths and the displacement of thousands.
