The federal government in Islamabad is facing mounting criticism over its handling of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, as a senior provincial minister accused the authorities of serious human rights abuses, according to Dawn. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan alleged that the federal administration is intentionally denying the imprisoned couple proper medical treatment while also restricting access to their family members and senior PTI leaders.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Insaf Doctors Forum at the Peshawar Press Club, Jan said the current government has overseen a sharp decline in basic rights and healthcare standards. He claimed that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are being deliberately deprived of adequate medical attention and communication with relatives despite growing concerns about their health. Jan further disclosed that Khan has been suffering from an eye condition for the past four months and that his vision has yet to fully recover. He alleged that the former premier and his wife were secretly moved to a hospital late at night for treatment in a manner that violated prison regulations.
Criticising the lack of transparency, Jan stated that PTI was only informed that the medical procedure lasted around three hours, while no official medical report or verified details were provided by the authorities. The minister demanded that the government immediately ease restrictions on the couple and allow them access to their personal doctors. He also called for their transfer to Shifa International Hospital for proper and comprehensive medical care.
Jan accused the state of applying double standards in its treatment of political leaders. Referring to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, he claimed Sharif had received extensive facilities and unrestricted visitor access during his imprisonment, whereas Imran Khan is being kept in isolation and denied similar rights. He also criticised the federal government for allegedly undermining the judiciary, arguing that restrictions placed on meetings with Khan contradict court directives and amount to contempt of court.
Beyond the issue of Khan’s imprisonment, Jan attacked the government’s economic policies, saying inflation, unemployment, and rising fuel prices have placed immense financial pressure on ordinary citizens. According to Dawn, the minister also accused Islamabad of neglecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by withholding vital resources and delaying funds intended for internally displaced persons. He claimed the federal government still owes the province PKR 4.8 billion in unpaid dues.
Outlining PTI’s future strategy, Jan announced that different party wings would launch campaigns demanding the immediate release of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, while also pressing for their right to proper medical care. He added that party leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has been authorised by Khan to oversee future anti-government protest plans and political decision-making.
