Kerala Minister Roji M John Flags 'Divisive Agendas' in Higher Education on Teachers Day

Kerala Higher Education Minister Roji M John on Saturday raised concerns over what he described as “divisive agendas” entering the higher education sector, stressing that universities should remain spaces that promote independent thinking, equality and democratic values. In a message issued on Teachers’ Day, Roji said those holding senior positions in universities have a responsibility to protect the credibility and independence of academic institutions. He maintained that people occupying such positions should not allow political or ideological interests to influence the functioning of universities.

The minister’s remarks come amid an ongoing political dispute in Kerala over the administration of state universities and the role of the Governor, who serves as the chancellor of the universities. The state government and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar have been at odds over several issues, including appointments to university bodies and the selection of vice-chancellors.

Roji has previously criticised the participation of some vice-chancellors in an RSS programme attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. The minister had questioned whether university heads should take part in events organised by ideological organisations while holding positions that require them to maintain academic and administrative neutrality.

In his Teachers’ Day message, Roji also stressed the wider responsibility of teachers in shaping society. He said education should encourage students to develop critical thinking and respect humanity rather than promote discrimination or division. The minister referred to the importance of creating educational institutions where students from different backgrounds can learn and express their views without fear. He argued that teachers and academic leaders have an important role in ensuring that campuses remain inclusive and focused on education.

Teachers’ Day is observed across India on September 5, marking the birth anniversary of former President and renowned educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The day is used to recognise the contribution of teachers and highlight their role in shaping future generations. Roji’s latest statement comes as debates over academic freedom, university governance and political influence in higher education continue in Kerala. His comments are likely to add to the wider discussion about how universities can preserve institutional autonomy while ensuring that education remains accessible, inclusive and focused on academic development.
