The Karnataka government has announced a compensation scheme for victims of dog attacks, providing ₹5 lakh to families of those who die from dog bites. For non-fatal injuries caused by stray dogs, including punctures, deep bruising with lacerations, or multiple bites, a total compensation of ₹5,000 will be provided—₹3,500 directly to the victim and ₹1,500 to the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust for treatment costs.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram raised concerns about the rising cases of dog bites and rabies-related deaths in Tamil Nadu, noting that the state recorded around 5.25 lakh dog bite incidents and 28 rabies deaths this year. In a post on X, he emphasized that while dog lovers’ concerns are valid, it is important to implement measures like sequestering, sterilizing, and vaccinating stray dogs to ensure public safety, particularly for children, women, and senior citizens.
Chidambaram referred to a Supreme Court directive ordering the removal of stray dogs from educational institutions, hospitals, sports complexes, bus stands, and railway stations. The Court instructed that dogs should not be returned to their original locations after vaccination and sterilization and that these areas must be properly fenced. Local government bodies are responsible for relocating the dogs to designated shelters, and Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories must ensure strict compliance, with officers held personally accountable for lapses.
