Renowned Bollywood lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar has voiced strong disapproval over the respectful welcome given to Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister, during his recent visit to India. On social media, Akhtar lamented the reception, saying he hangs his head in shame at the honour extended to a representative of a group widely condemned for terrorism and human rights abuses.
The visit of Muttaqi marks the first by a Taliban leader to India since the group took control of Afghanistan in 2021. During his trip, he was greeted with flowers and applause upon arrival at the influential Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, a gesture that sparked widespread debate in the country. Akhtar criticized this reception, calling it a reverent welcome undeserved for someone known for policies that include banning girls education. He also expressed disappointment towards the seminarys role in this, asserting that it was shameful for such an institution to honor what he described as an Islamic Hero of the Taliban.
This incident has not only ignited controversy over the diplomatic approach but also touched on broader social concerns. For instance, the exclusion of women journalists from an early press conference held by Muttaqi in New Delhi further compounded criticism, leading to a follow-up event where women journalists were invited after public outcry. Akhtar’s vocal stance reflects his history of engagement with sociopolitical issues, often using his platform to speak out on national matters. His reaction resonates with many who question the wisdom and morality of extending formal respect to Taliban officials in the current geopolitical climate.
This episode underscores the complex and sensitive nature of Indias interaction with the Taliban-led Afghan government—a relationship walked with caution due to diplomatic, security, and humanitarian considerations. While India has refrained from officially recognizing the Taliban regime, it continues to engage through unofficial channels and humanitarian efforts, aiming to balance its strategic interests with ethical concerns.
