External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday met with the Indian community in Jamaica and spoke about the significant transformation India has experienced in recent years. He also highlighted the latest progress in India-Jamaica relations. Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at interacting with the diaspora and appreciated the Jamaican Prime Minister’s recognition of their contributions. He noted that discussions covered India’s ongoing transformation, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, human development, technology-driven governance, and entrepreneurship.
Emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations, Jaishankar described India-Jamaica relations as rooted in shared history, mutual respect, and friendship. He poetically remarked that the relationship is reflected in cricket, respect, and camaraderie, pointing to the cultural and sporting connections between the countries.
During his visit, Jaishankar attended an event at Sabina Park alongside Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, where they inaugurated an electronic scoreboard gifted by India. He expressed hope that it would witness many memorable cricket moments and serve as a symbol of the deepening partnership between the two nations.
Adding a light-hearted touch, he mentioned that West Indies cricket legend Chris Gayle was missed at the event, acknowledging his strong association with the iconic venue. Jaishankar visited Old Harbour, the historic site where the first Indians arrived in Jamaica over 180 years ago. He described the visit as meaningful, as it allowed him to connect with the Indian diaspora and recognize their lasting cultural heritage in the country.
