External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has strongly condemned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent claims about Jaishankars visit to the United States in December 2024. Gandhi had alleged that Jaishankar had been sent multiple times to secure an invitation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump. In a forceful rebuttal, Jaishankar dismissed these allegations as deliberate falsehoods and clarified the true purpose of his visit to the U.S., which, according to him, was to meet with U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Advisor as part of his official duties. During the trip, Jaishankar also chaired a meeting with Indian Consuls General.
Jaishankar pointed out that there was no discussion regarding Modis attendance at Trump’s inauguration during his visit, adding that it was widely known that India does not send the Prime Minister to presidential inauguration ceremonies. Instead, India is represented by Special Envoys at such events. Jaishankar also expressed concern over the political motives behind Gandhi’s remarks, suggesting that while the allegations may have been made for political gain, they could harm India’s international standing. The controversy unfolded when Rahul Gandhi, during a Lok Sabha session, criticized the governments economic policies, suggesting that if India had a more robust and self-sufficient production system, the U.S. president would personally invite Prime Minister Modi instead of requiring diplomatic efforts to secure such an invitation. Gandhi’s comments implied that India’s economic strength was directly linked to how the country was perceived internationally, particularly by major global powers like the U.S.
Jaishankar’s response not only rejected the claims about his visit but also emphasized the potential diplomatic repercussions of such false narratives, which could undermine Indias reputation on the global stage. This exchange between Jaishankar and Gandhi highlights ongoing political tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress party. The heated exchange reflects the broader political discourse in India, where foreign policy and national security issues are often central to the debate, especially as the country navigates complex international relationships and strives to strengthen its global standing. The incident also underscores the importance of accurate information and responsible political discourse in shaping perceptions of India’s foreign policy approach.
