Jackie Chan picked up English by listening to country music. The 71-year-old actor, originally from Hong Kong and a native Cantonese speaker, explained that the slow pace of country songs made them easier to understand. Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday (June 3), Jackie said, I learned English from country songs because they’re slow. He then delighted the audience and Kelly by singing the chorus of Willie Nelson’s Always on My Mind.
In response, Kelly beamed, I just got serenaded by Jackie Chan! That’s how I’m going to remember this day! Jackie recalled his time filming Rush Hour in 1998, where his co-star Chris Tucker famously asked, “Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?” Jackie admitted he actually didn’t. I had no idea what Chris Tucker was saying the whole movie, he confessed.
Because of his limited English skills at the time, Jackie said his lines would change from one take to the next. Every scene, every shot, the dialogue was different. My dialogue coach stood behind the camera and fed me the lines. I just followed their cue. Kelly then asked if he ever had moments during filming where he didn’t understand someone on set. Jackie admitted that happened often. The worst part was when someone would yell, ‘Cut! Take a break! Jackie...’ and then something really fast, he recalled. I’d turn to my coach and ask, ‘What did he say?’ They speak so fast!
Jackie now stars in Karate Kid: Legends, where he reprises his role as Mr. Han. In the new film, his character mentors his young nephew Li (played by Ben Wang), who is bullied in school in New York City. Jackie said he didn’t need any special training for the role, as hes been practicing fight choreography since the 1960s. Having first joined the Karate Kid franchise in 2010 alongside Jaden Smith, Jackie said, “I don’t need to train anymore. I’ve been doing this for 64 years—fighting, fighting, fighting.”
