In alignment with the Centre’s initiative to expand urban green spaces, the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department has established an eco-friendly city forest near Batote in Ramban district, providing both locals and tourists a peaceful place for leisure and recreation. Conservator of Forests, Chenab Circle, Arshdeep Singh, explained that the project emphasizes minimal concrete construction, using natural wooden structures, walking tracks, scenic viewpoints, and landscaped areas to promote environmental awareness and healthier living habits.
He noted that the central government’s vision is to enhance natural forest or green patches within towns and cities by improving public access so people can sit, relax, and meditate in a natural setting. In this spirit, the Forest Department recently developed a city forest patch near Batote. The area has been properly fenced, and construction has been kept minimal, with wooden elements used instead of concrete. Facilities include wooden benches, an artistic entrance gate, walking paths, and two viewing points for visitors.
Singh added that the park was recently inaugurated by the Forest Minister and similar eco-parks, city forests, and Nagar Vans are being developed across Jammu and Kashmir. The department plans to continue expanding such initiatives wherever land is available, aiming to provide clean air and natural spaces for people to enjoy with their families amid rising pollution.
He further said that this initiative is part of a broader policy under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It also aims to increase environmental awareness by encouraging people to connect with nature and promote greenery in their surroundings. Kashmir is witnessing an increase in tourist arrivals during May, with visitors enjoying its scenic beauty, especially the tranquil Dal Lake and its pleasant early morning weather.
