Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly criticized fresh US sanctions imposed on Iran’s ambassador-designate to Lebanon, Mohammad Reza Rauf Sheibani, along with several other Iranian and Lebanese individuals, calling the measures “illegal” and “without justification.” The reaction came after the United States announced sanctions against nine individuals accused of helping Hezbollah undermine Lebanon’s sovereignty and obstruct efforts aimed at reducing the group’s influence in the country.
Those targeted by the sanctions include Hezbollah-linked figures, Iranian officials, and Lebanese security personnel. Washington said the measures were intended to counter activities that allegedly threaten stability in Lebanon and interfere with the peace process. In an official statement, Iran accused the US of violating international law and ignoring principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, particularly those related to respecting the sovereignty of nations.
Tehran described the sanctions against Sheibani as another example of what it called Washington’s disregard for international norms. The ministry also condemned sanctions imposed on Hezbollah members and Lebanese officials, arguing that the US was attempting to weaken Lebanon internally and fuel divisions within Lebanese society.
Iran further claimed the actions reflected continued American support for Israel amid ongoing tensions in the region. The statement added that Lebanese groups would continue defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through unity and national cohesion. The US Treasury Department said the sanctioned individuals were involved in efforts that hinder Lebanon’s peace and security, including activities connected to Hezbollah’s influence and operations.
Among those sanctioned are Hezbollah executive council member Mohamed Abdel-Mottaleb Fanich, Lebanese MP Nizammeddine Fadlallah, and senior Hezbollah-linked officials Ibrahim al-Moussawi and Hussein Al-Hajj Hassan. The sanctions also target Mohammad Reza Sheibani, along with Amal Movement-linked security officials Ahmad Asaad Baalbaki and Ali Ahmad Safawi. Lebanese security officials Samir Hamadi and Khattar Nasser Eldin were accused by US authorities of allegedly providing sensitive intelligence to Hezbollah during the past year.
