Indian Seafarer Killed in Black Sea Ship Attack; MEA Condemns Strike, Calls for Safe Maritime Navigation

An Indian crew member was killed after a commercial cargo vessel came under attack while transiting the Black Sea, prompting the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to strongly condemn the incident and describe it as a matter of serious concern. The government said it is in touch with the relevant authorities and is extending assistance to the victims family. According to the MEA, the vessel MV OMORFI was attacked on July 18 while sailing through the Black Sea. The ship had ten crew members on board, including three Indian nationals. One Indian sailor lost his life in the attack, while the remaining two Indian crew members are reported to be safe.

In an official statement, the ministry condemned attacks on civilian merchant vessels, stressing that commercial shipping should not be targeted under any circumstances. It also emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and freedom of international maritime navigation, warning that such incidents pose risks to global trade and innocent seafarers.

The Indian government said its diplomatic mission is coordinating with local authorities and the shipping company to gather more details about the incident and provide all possible assistance to the deceased sailors family. Officials are also closely monitoring developments related to the attack. The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the growing dangers faced by merchant vessels operating in the Black Sea, where the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to threaten civilian shipping. Commercial ships transporting commodities through the region have increasingly found themselves exposed to missile strikes and other security risks despite not being directly involved in military operations.

India is among the worlds largest suppliers of merchant seafarers, with thousands of Indian sailors serving aboard international cargo ships. The government has repeatedly urged all parties involved in armed conflicts to respect international maritime law and ensure the protection of civilian vessels and their crews.
