Thirty Indian fishermen were repatriated from Sri Lanka on Tuesday and are currently returning home, according to the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka. The mission shared the update on X and posted a photograph of the fishermen following their release. This development comes shortly after a similar instance in March, when 14 Indian fishermen who had been detained by Sri Lankan authorities were also sent back to India.
The issue of Indian fishermen crossing into Sri Lankan waters remains a persistent concern between the two countries. Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Harsha de Silva has described it as a long-standing and complex problem that is unlikely to be resolved quickly. He explained that fishing communities on both sides of the Palk Strait depend heavily on the sea for their livelihoods. Unlike large corporations, these are small-scale fishermen who venture out daily to earn a living.
De Silva also pointed out that Indian trawlers often enter Sri Lankan waters in large numbers, sometimes in the hundreds, making it difficult to manage the situation through simple enforcement of maritime boundaries. He emphasized that the issue is more legal than political, particularly regarding the practice of bottom trawling and its environmental impact on the seabed. However, he believes that economic solutions may be more effective than legal measures. The Sri Lankan Navy apprehended 12 Indian fishermen along with a boat from Pamban while they were fishing in the Gulf of Mannar, triggering protests among local fishing communities in Tamil Nadu.
