India's Toffee Exports Rise 166 percent Since 2014, Says Piyush Goyal After Viral Modi-Meloni Gift Moment

India’s toffee and confectionery exports have registered a sharp growth of around 166% since 2014, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who highlighted the figures following a recent viral diplomatic moment involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Speaking about the performance of India’s food export sector, Goyal said that exports of toffees and similar confectionery items have increased significantly over the last decade, rising from modest levels in 2013–14 to more than double in recent years. He described the growth as a reflection of India’s expanding presence in global packaged food markets.
The statement came after a light-hearted moment during PM Modi’s recent visit to Italy, where he reportedly gifted “Melody” toffees to PM Giorgia Meloni. The interaction quickly gained traction on social media, with clips of Meloni receiving and acknowledging the sweet going viral. The moment also revived the popular “Melodi” trend online, blending the names of the two leaders.
Amid the buzz, the minister referred to the export surge as a “sweet success story,” noting that Indian confectionery products are gaining popularity in several international markets. Industry observers say demand has been rising in regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, driven by competitive pricing, familiar taste profiles, and the global Indian diaspora.
Experts also point out that India’s broader food processing and FMCG exports have seen steady growth, supported by improved manufacturing standards, branding efforts, and government initiatives aimed at boosting “Made in India” products abroad. While confectionery remains a relatively small segment compared to major export categories, the consistent upward trend is being viewed as a positive sign for diversification in India’s export basket.
Officials believe that with continued innovation in packaging, stronger global distribution, and expanding brand recognition, India’s sweet and snack exports could see further growth in the coming years. The viral diplomatic exchange has, meanwhile, given an unexpected boost to public attention on a niche but growing export category—turning a simple toffee into a symbol of India’s evolving trade story.
