India has strongly dismissed concerns raised over press freedom and human rights, with officials describing several international assessments as being based on “misleading” or “ignorant NGO reports,” during a diplomatic interaction in Oslo, Norway. The remarks were made by a senior representative of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) during a press briefing, where questions were raised regarding India’s media environment and democratic freedoms.
According to the MEA, global perceptions of India are often shaped by selective reporting that does not fully reflect the country’s democratic structure or the scale of its media landscape. The official stressed that India has one of the world’s largest and most diverse media ecosystems, operating across multiple languages and regions. The MEA also reiterated that the Indian Constitution guarantees fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and expression, while allowing reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order, sovereignty, and national security. Officials highlighted that India remains a vibrant democracy where citizens regularly participate in elections and have access to legal remedies.
The response came after concerns were raised regarding international press freedom rankings and reports from global watchdog organizations, which have in recent years placed India lower in global indices related to media independence and civil liberties. Indian authorities, however, have consistently rejected such rankings, arguing that they do not accurately represent ground realities and fail to account for the diversity and complexity of the country’s media environment.
The exchange in Oslo reflects a continuing difference in perception between India and certain international organizations over issues related to press freedom. While global groups often point to concerns around journalist safety and media independence, Indian officials maintain that these evaluations are incomplete and based on limited data sources. The MEA’s remarks underscore India’s continued pushback against external criticism, reinforcing its position that the country’s democratic framework remains strong and functional despite differing international assessments.
