India has announced an extension of its $500 million line of credit to Guyana to support projects in key sectors, including road infrastructure, healthcare and defence. The announcement was made by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during his meeting with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali in Antigua and Barbuda. Jaishankar, who reached St. Johns on Tuesday, held discussions with President Ali on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and reviewing ongoing cooperation between the two countries.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Jaishankar said both sides discussed the progress made in their partnership, particularly following Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Guyana in 2024. He also confirmed the extension of the $500 million credit facility for development initiatives in roads, healthcare and defence. During the visit, India and Guyana signed several agreements aimed at expanding economic and technological cooperation. These included arrangements for supplying and installing manufacturing projects for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).
The two countries also agreed to provide grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects and strengthen collaboration in Digital Public Infrastructure. Another key area of cooperation involves developing and supporting a digital payment system in Guyana along the lines of Indias Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The agreements are expected to deepen Indias development partnership with Guyana while supporting the countrys infrastructure and digital transformation efforts.
Jaishankar participated in a breakfast meeting involving Commonwealth heads of government and business leaders. Addressing the gathering, he called on Commonwealth countries to reduce their economic vulnerabilities by diversifying their partnerships and supply chains. Indias latest initiatives reflect its continued efforts to expand cooperation with Guyana and strengthen its engagement with Caribbean and Commonwealth nations.
