In yet another incident linked to ongoing post-poll violence and clashes in West Bengal, unidentified miscreants allegedly opened fire on a police team accompanied by central forces during a patrol operation, according to local accounts. The incident occurred in the Bamangheri area (Ward No. 14) under the Sarberia-Agarhati Gram Panchayat within the jurisdiction of Nazat Police Station. Reports indicate that several personnel were injured, including the Officer-in-Charge of Nazat Police Station, a police constable from Rajbari Outpost, and a woman police officer. Two personnel from the central forces also sustained gunshot injuries.
All the injured were first shifted to Minakha Rural Hospital and later referred to hospitals in Kolkata for advanced treatment. During the follow-up investigation, security agencies reportedly recovered a bag containing explosives from the site of the incident. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic during the attack. A local resident said she and her family hid under a bed as a group of young men ran through their property. She also claimed that police later broke into their house and took family members into custody, who were released the next morning. The resident further alleged that several individuals from both tribal and Muslim communities were detained in the aftermath of the incident, and that gunshots were heard during the chaos, which at first were mistaken for other noises.
The situation remains tense in the area, with further details still awaited as investigations continue. The incident comes at a time when the Election Commission of India has issued strict directions to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Central Armed Police Forces to maintain zero tolerance against any form of post-poll violence in the state.
