Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has once again vehemently criticized Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, branding him as the “most oppressive dictator” in the countrys history and accusing him of being mentally unstable. From his prison cell, where he has been held since August 2023 on multiple charges, Khan launched this fierce condemnation through a post on his official social media account, highlighting what he described as unprecedented tyranny under Munir’s rule.
Khan’s denunciation comes amid an ongoing power struggle within Pakistan, marked by the militarys increasing dominance over political affairs. He accused Munir of abusing his position in an unchecked lust for power, claiming that such tyranny has led to ruthless actions, including fatal police firing incidents against his party workers in Islamabad and harsh crackdowns on political groups such as Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan. According to Khan, such brutalities extend to all segments of society, including women, and represent a level of oppression unprecedented in Pakistan’s history.
The former cricket star-turned-politician also highlighted the deteriorating conditions faced by him and his family in custody. He alleged extreme political victimization, stating that he is kept in complete isolation with very limited contact with the outside world, including minimal communication with his sons. Khan further accused the military regime of inflicting pressure on his wife, Bushra Bibi, who he says is held in solitary confinement despite having no role in politics—a tactic he sees as part of a broader campaign of intimidation.
Khan contrasted his vision of a strong state—a nation governed by the rule of law, justice, and democratic freedoms—with the current regime’s version, which he describes as a “hard state” ruled by force and repression, dubbed “Asim Law.” He argued that this approach erodes Pakistans foundational pillars rather than strengthening them, warning that tyranny weakens the state’s social fabric.
This conflict reflects a deeper political crisis in Pakistan where the military establishment, led by Asim Munir, has tightened its grip following Khan’s prolonged imprisonment. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party remains sidelined politically, while Munir’s power is increasingly consolidated, amid moves like constitutional amendments believed to protect the army chief’s authority further.
Imran Khan’s latest outburst underscores the severe tensions between civilian political forces and the military leadership in Pakistan. His accusations against Asim Munir not only highlight personal grievances but also serve as a stark critique of what he perceives as an authoritarian regime undermining Pakistan’s democracy and fundamental freedoms.
