The Senior Superintendent of Roshnabad District Jail in Haridwar has allegedly received death threats through WhatsApp, with the sender reportedly using the name of the “Lawrence Group” in an attempt to intimidate the senior prison official. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the person behind the threats. Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Singh Bhullar said the jail official approached police after receiving a threatening WhatsApp call, which was followed by several messages. A formal complaint was subsequently filed, leading to the registration of an FIR at the SIDCUL police station.
Given that the complaint involved a senior government officer and referenced the name of a known gangster, police have assigned specialised teams to the investigation. The Special Operations Group (SOG) technical unit and cyber team are examining the digital evidence and attempting to trace the suspect. Bhullar said investigators had already gathered important information about the person allegedly responsible for sending the threats and were working to locate and arrest him. At the same time, police have not found evidence so far connecting the suspect with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi or his wider network.
According to the SSP, the preliminary investigation suggests that the accused may have deliberately used the gangsters name to frighten the jail superintendent rather than having any actual association with the group. Police are continuing to verify the source and authenticity of the threats. Roshnabad Jail Superintendent Manoj Kumar Arya said the incident may have originated from a dispute involving a woman prisoner identified as Sheela. According to Arya, the inmate had allegedly behaved improperly with a female deputy jailor and was subsequently reprimanded.
Arya said Sheelas alleged husband, Himanshu, visited the jail on September 8 following the incident and later contacted the superintendent several times. The communication eventually escalated, with Himanshu allegedly sending threatening messages through WhatsApp. The jail superintendent said the messages contained threats to kill and shoot him. One of the messages also reportedly referred to the “Lawrence group from Punjab”, apparently in an attempt to make the threat appear more serious. Arya informed senior police officials about the matter and submitted a written complaint. Following the complaint, authorities registered an FIR at the SIDCUL police station and began examining the WhatsApp communication and other available evidence.
Police are now working to establish the identity, motive and possible background of the person who issued the threats. The cyber and technical teams are expected to play a key role in tracing the source of the messages and determining whether the accused has any connection to organised criminal networks. Officials have stressed that no confirmed link between the accused and Lawrence Bishnoi or his gang has emerged during the investigation. The case remains under investigation, and further action will depend on the evidence gathered by the police teams.
