West Bengal entered a major political crisis on Wednesday after Governor R.N. Ravi dissolved the state Assembly following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign despite her party’s defeat in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The move came after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, marking a historic breakthrough in a state long dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
According to Raj Bhavan officials, the Governor exercised his constitutional authority to dissolve the Assembly after the outgoing government failed to initiate the transition process. The decision effectively ended the tenure of the current Assembly and opened the path for the formation of a new government. Mamata Banerjee, however, maintained that the election verdict was questionable and alleged irregularities during the voting and counting process. Addressing party workers in Kolkata, she claimed that the mandate did not reflect the “real voice of Bengal” and indicated that the TMC could challenge the results legally.
The BJP sharply criticized Banerjee’s stand, accusing her of refusing to accept the democratic verdict. Senior BJP leaders stated that the people of West Bengal had voted decisively for political change and that the transition of power should happen peacefully and constitutionally. Political analysts described the situation as one of the most unusual post-election developments in recent Indian politics. While outgoing governments typically continue in a caretaker role until a new administration takes charge, experts noted that openly refusing to step down after an electoral defeat is extremely rare.
The BJP’s victory is being viewed as a significant political shift in eastern India. The party’s aggressive campaign, focus on governance issues, and organizational growth across Bengal reportedly helped it gain strong support among voters. Security has been tightened across several districts amid concerns over post-election violence. Reports of clashes between supporters of rival parties have surfaced from some areas, prompting authorities to increase police deployment.
Attention is now focused on the Governor’s next steps, including inviting the BJP legislature party to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister is expected in the coming days. The unfolding developments have triggered nationwide debate over constitutional conventions, the role of Governors, and the importance of respecting electoral outcomes in a parliamentary democracy.
