Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad, recalling his extraordinary sacrifice in India’s struggle for Independence. In a post on X, the Prime Minister saluted Azad on his martyrdom day, describing him as a brave son of Mother India who gave up everything to break the chains of colonial rule and whose legacy will live on forever.
Amit Shah also remembered Azad with deep respect, highlighting his immense contribution to the freedom movement. He said Azad fought the British with unmatched courage, chanting “Vande Mataram” until his final moments. Shah noted that from the historic Kakori train action to the formation of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, every chapter of Azad’s life reflected unwavering dedication to India’s independence and continues to inspire patriotic fervour.
Born as Chandra Shekhar Sitaram Tiwari in Unnao district of the then United Provinces, Azad emerged as a key revolutionary leader who organised and guided young freedom fighters. He played a crucial role in restructuring the Hindustan Republican Association after many of its members were jailed or executed. Following the execution of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, in 1927, Azad took charge of the organisation and carried forward its mission.
Renowned for his daring spirit, Azad was involved in the 1925 Kakori train action, in which revolutionaries seized government funds being transported by rail. Born on July 23, 1906, in Madhya Pradesh, he joined the Non-Cooperation Movement at the age of 15. Azad was martyred in a police encounter in Allahabad on February 27, 1931. He is remembered for his fearless resolve and his powerful declaration: “We will face the bullets of enemies. We were free, and we will remain free.”
