Narendra Modi began his Friday morning on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, where he interacted with local boatmen and morning walkers. During his visit, he reiterated his government’s commitment to the development and prosperity of West Bengal, especially as the state undergoes an active election phase. In a post on X, the Prime Minister reflected on the cultural and spiritual importance of the Ganga, stating that it flows through “the soul of Bengal.” Sharing pictures of himself sailing on the Hooghly, he expressed gratitude to the river, often revered as Maa Ganga, and praised the dedication and hard work of the boatmen he met. He described the river as a symbol of India’s timeless civilisation and deep-rooted traditions.
Modi also shared additional glimpses from his visit, including scenic views of the Vidyasagar Setu and the iconic Howrah Bridge. He mentioned that he briefly tried photography, capturing the beauty of the river and its surroundings. A day earlier, while addressing an election rally, Modi said that a strong wave of change is sweeping across Bengal. He claimed that women and youth are increasingly voicing their demand for change and that this sentiment is visible across the state. Speaking in Krishnanagar, he expressed confidence that voters would support his party in the ongoing elections.
He also criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress, accusing it of failing to protect the rights and dignity of women and opposing key legislative measures such as the women’s reservation amendment. He urged first-time voters and the general public to seize this moment to bring political change. Voter turnout in several districts of West Bengal crossed 90 percent, indicating strong public participation. The remaining seats will go to polls on April 29, and the results are scheduled to be announced on May 4.
