Elon Musk’s xAI has introduced its first artificial intelligence coding agent, Grok Build, as part of its effort to compete more directly with Anthropic PBC’s Claude in the rapidly growing field of AI-assisted software development. The new model is currently in its early testing phase and is available only to paying subscribers. It represents xAI’s first significant step into professional-grade coding tools. According to information shared on the company’s website, the agent is capable of executing complex programming tasks by following user instructions, aiming to simplify and speed up software development workflows.
The move highlights xAI’s intention to strengthen its position in the competitive AI coding market, which has become a major revenue-generating segment within the industry. Elon Musk has openly acknowledged that his company has been trailing behind competitors in this area, particularly Anthropic’s Claude models, which are widely recognized for their strong coding performance.
xAI president Michael Nicolls, who also has experience with Starlink, has reportedly emphasized internally that achieving performance comparable to Claude is a near-term priority for the company. His remarks reflect the internal push to improve the model’s capabilities and close the gap with leading AI systems. This development also comes as Musk prepares for a potential large-scale initial public offering of SpaceX later this year, which could become one of the biggest IPOs in history. In preparation, xAI has been undergoing significant restructuring, including workforce reductions, new strategic partnerships, and aggressive hiring to rebuild its technical teams after the departure of several founding members.
In addition, xAI recently formed a partnership with the AI coding platform Cursor to enhance its development and computing infrastructure. Engineers from Cursor have already been collaborating with xAI teams in recent weeks. However, the company has also experienced notable talent losses, including Devendra Chaplot, a Mistral AI co-founder who joined xAI in March, and Beibin Li, who previously led the post-training team. Grok Build marks an important step for xAI as it tries to establish itself as a serious competitor in the AI coding landscape, while simultaneously navigating internal changes and increasing industry competition.
