Delhi Transport Department Wins International Recognition for Helmet Safety Campaign

The Delhi Transport Department has received international recognition for its road safety awareness initiative, ‘Helmet Wearing–Consequences’, at the World Safety 2026 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. The campaign was awarded an ‘Honourable Mention’ in the ‘Ultra Short Video’ category at the International Safety Media Awards. The initiative was launched in August 2025 by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the presence of Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and other officials.

The Transport Department sought to draw attention to the importance of proper helmet use among two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers. It highlighted the potential dangers and consequences of travelling without a helmet or wearing one incorrectly. According to the department, the campaign was designed to communicate that wearing a helmet goes beyond simply complying with traffic regulations. Proper helmet use is an important safety precaution that can help protect both riders and passengers in the event of a road accident.

The International Safety Media Awards recognise road and public safety communication initiatives from different parts of the world. Campaigns are assessed by an international panel of experts from the fields of accident prevention and media. The evaluation considers factors including creativity, innovation, production standards, clarity of communication, assessment methods and measurable outcomes.

Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the international recognition underlined the government’s efforts to strengthen road safety awareness in Delhi. He noted that initiatives such as ‘Helmet Wearing–Consequences’ can encourage safer behaviour among road users while supporting enforcement activities and other safety measures. Singh added that the recognition would provide further motivation to expand public awareness initiatives and encourage more responsible behaviour on Delhi’s roads.

The city also recently hosted a special programme under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan at Talkatora Stadium to recognise the achievements and abilities of Divyangjans. The event aimed to showcase their contributions and encourage wider public participation in creating equal opportunities, dignity, support and empowerment for persons with disabilities.
