Narendra Modi will address a national-level ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan’ at Vigyan Bhawan, aimed at supporting the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023. The Prime Minister stated that the event will help advance discussions on increasing women’s participation in Parliament and state legislatures. In a message shared on X, he noted that the programme, scheduled for 11 AM, will bring together women from diverse backgrounds and encourage greater involvement of women in building a developed India, including their representation in legislative bodies.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Sammelan will include participants from various fields such as government, academia, science, sports, entrepreneurship, media, social work, and culture. The event aims to strengthen the commitment to women’s active role in shaping India’s development and highlight their growing presence in governance, from local bodies to Parliament.
The programme will also emphasize the importance of women’s representation in decision-making and showcase their contribution toward the vision of a developed India by 2047. It reflects the government’s focus on women-led development as a key pillar of this vision. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, passed in September 2023, provides for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. A special Parliament session is scheduled for April 16 to move forward with its implementation.
The law links women’s reservation to a new census and delimitation exercise. Due to delays in conducting a fresh census, the process is expected to rely on 2011 census data. Following delimitation, the number of Lok Sabha seats could rise from 543 to 816. The government is also planning two key amendments, including a separate Delimitation Bill, both requiring constitutional approval. While SCST reservations will continue, there is no provision for OBC reservation in the current framework.
