Delhi Police has launched search operations across different parts of the national capital to trace and arrest the manager of the Malviya Nagar hotel where a devastating fire claimed 21 lives on Wednesday. The move follows the arrest of the hotel owner, Lovkesh Bajaj. An FIR has been lodged against him at the Malviya Nagar Police Station under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 105, 326(g), 324(5), 125(a), 125(b), and 287.
Section 105 relates to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while Section 326(g) pertains to damage caused to property or premises using fire or explosive materials. Section 324(5) deals with mischief resulting in damage, Sections 125(a) and 125(b) cover acts that endanger human life or personal safety, and Section 287 concerns negligent handling of fire or combustible substances.
According to sources, Bajaj told investigators during questioning that he was unable to personally supervise or manage the hotel due to lack of time. He reportedly stated that the day-to-day functioning of the property, including billing, accounts, and overall management, had been entrusted to another individual. Sources further revealed that Bajaj claimed structural modifications, such as expanding room sizes and other alterations, were recommended by another person who allegedly assured him that such practices were common and manageable in Delhi.
Investigators also learnt that the hotel did not possess a Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC), an admission Bajaj allegedly made during interrogation. The fire resulted in the deaths of 21 people, including 12 foreign nationals and 9 Indian citizens. Delhi Police is now examining records from the electricity department and other agencies to verify approvals, permissions, and compliance related to the hotel, especially regarding structural changes. Authorities are also looking into ownership and operational control of multiple properties linked to the accused as part of the ongoing investigation.
